I try to use a variety of concrete experiences, as well as pictures, to teach thinking strategies. Providing concrete experiences with new thinking strategies can be the hook many children need to buy into it (Comprehension Connections, by Tanny McGregor).
The student asked questions before they could touch the edamame.
They were able to ask questions while they were touching, tasting, smelling.
Afterwards, they also asked questions.
